Looking For Signs

Luke 11:29-32

The Sign of Jonah

29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here.

The more skeptical we become, the more we look for proof, for signs. We sense Jesus' frustration with his generation who were fortunate enough to have the ultimate sign, Jesus himself, but refused to see it, to accept it. Our generation, fast becoming more and more faithless, not only would reject the sign of Jonah, but have in so many instances rejected Jesus himself. Witness our empty churches, our younger generation growing p with no knowledge of God, nor experience with a believing community. To combat this trend, believers have to become more visible, more vocal, to stand up and witness to their faith, to preach it by their actions, not just by their words.

Bro. Rene

Dear God, help me to be a sign of your presence in this world and of your love for us. Amen.
