We Too Are Called

Luke 6:12-16 - A Few Good Men: The Twelve Apostles | Redeeming God

Luke 6: 12-16

The Twelve Apostles

1One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

We know very little about these two Apostles, Simon and Jude, yet we honor them for their acceptance of the call to follow Jesus and give their talents, and yes, their lives, to fulfill that call. Simon was part of the Zealot party, angry with Roman domination and eager to find a change.  He found it, not in the political sphere, but in the spiritual, preaching the Good News as Jesus commanded and helping to establish a spiritual and lasting kingdom, where we today find a home.

We too are called to further establish that kingdom by attracting others to it by our lives, if not by our words. It is an honor and blessing to be singled out for this mission; may we renew our dedication to it and proceed zealously and steadfastly to fulfill our call. And may Saints Simon and Jude help us be today's faithful apostles.

Bro. Rene

Christ, before you called the Apostles, you went alone to the mountain to pray to the Father. When we face important decisions, give us the courage to approach our Father as you did. Confident in God’s love for us, we know that God will inspire us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Like Saints Simon and Jude, may we be tireless in our proclamation of your kingdom to all we encounter. We ask in your holy name. Amen.
