THAT DAY

The prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures often speak of "That Day"...the day of fulfillment of the prophecies, an unspecified day regarding a time line, but nonetheless, a day that will come to pass.  In the Christian Scriptures, it is seen as the Day when Jesus returns to claim all of creation for the Father.  It will truly be the ultimate fulfillment of the poetic imagery of the early prophets.  Let's look at the following passage, for example. (see Is 26:1-6)
ON THAT DAY,  they will sing this song in the land of Judah:
"A strong city have we;/ he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us.  Judah, a symbol of the nation of believers in Jesus; the strong city:  the City of God, home of those believers who are saved.
Open up the gates/ to let in a nation that is just,/ that keeps faith,/ A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace;/ in peace, for its trust in you."  Ideally, this is the Church, the people of God; it includes each one of us who are living in faith and trust, making a special effort during Advent to make this happen in our own lives, families and communities.
Trust in the Lord forever!/ For the Lord is an eternal Rock./ He humbles those in high places,/ and the lofty city he brings down;/ He tumbles it to the ground,/ levels it with the dust./  It is trampled underfoot by the needy,/ by the footsteps of the poor. Jesus is our Rock, upon whom a lasting city or relationship is built. Pride brings destruction and has no future, as the humility of the lowly will triumph.  Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth (Mt 5: 5)
So, we see that the City of God is based on belief, trust and humility...virtues to be developed and grown as we prepare for Christmas and for THAT DAY.
