"A date that will live in infamy." Seventy-two years ago the attack by the Empire of Japan on unsuspecting Pearl Harbor awoke "the sleeping giant" and left an indelible mark on our national memory. Survivors recall every detail of that horrible morning, and those of us who were young at the time cannot hear the words Pearl Harbor without stirring up the memories and the fright they carry. As a nation we rose to meet the challenge and for the next four years focused on two fronts to subdue the enemies who threatened our own and world freedom. "In unity there is strength." We truly lived this adage.
This is also the memorial of St. Ambrose, bishop of Milan from 374-397 also faced odds, not necessarily military opponents, but heretics and even the Emperor himself, whom he made kneel in humble submission and penitence. Ambrose was a model of faith, strength confidence and used his gifts to bring peace to his archdiocese.
For Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, this is Super Bowl Saturday, when our football team faces a huge challenge in the name of Xaverian Brothers High School. Certainly a challenge on a much lower scale than Pearl Harbor or the heresies Ambrose faced, but one which is important to the boys who have been working hard at practice and games since August. Five Fan buses will transport students to the game, but hundreds of others will drive there on their own. Excitement and spirit are high. We commend the teams, the memories this day arouses, the sacrifices made, and the challenges ahead of us into God's hands. Will he who has brought us thus far abandon us now?
