Preparing the Way

As mentioned yesterday, the Central Catholic Raiders played in the Super Bowl.  The good news is that they won the Division 1 State Championship.  What a gift!  We sent our prayers of gratitude to heaven echoing the Magnificat..: our souls proclaimed the Lord's greatness and our spirits rejoiced in God our Savior, for he looked with favor upon us and and did mighty things for us.  He raised up the lowly to a level where all generations will call us Champions!

John the Baptist appears on the scene as we begin the second week of Advent, shouting the haunting refrain made popular in the musical, Godspell: Prepare ye the way of the Lord. (Mt 3:3)  While not liturgical or deeply spiritual, the things we are doing ordinarily at this time are helping to prepare the way for Christmas:  cleaning the house, shopping, decorating, cooking special Christmas treats, sending Christmas cards and whatever else we come up with. Lots of things.  John, however, calls us to a deeper level of preparation:  a change of heart, a turning of our minds and souls toward God and the things of God:  "Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance." (Mt 3: 8).
One way of making a taking his admonition seriously is to make the sacrament of reconciliation  a priority sometime during Advent...to make an honest and sincere admission of our faults and sins, and truly "clean house" for the coming of the Savior. As we don't want our Christmas guests and family who come once a year to come to a dirty house, so too should we clean up our souls for the arrival of this special guest.
