A Hard Prediction

 

Luke 9: 43b-45 

⁴³ And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, ⁴⁴ “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” ⁴⁵ But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

Jesus was trying to prepare his disciples for the coming brutal events, but they did not understand what he was saying, and were afraid to ask for clarification. The old saying goes, "The truth hurts", usually when it applies to us, but in this case, it applied to his upcoming capture, interrogation, condemnation, scourging and crucifixion. Evidently it went right over the heads of the disciples. How many times to we miss the point, or refuse to probe a hard saying or Scriptures passage that might require something MORE from us?  We like to play dumb, or simply turn our backs to what is being asked of us. Jesus did not turn his back, so may we find courage through his example and respond willingly to what we hear him asking of us.
