We Need Never Hunger

Sunday within the Octave of Corpus Christi - June 23, 2019 - StMarysPNCC

 Luke 9: 11-17

Jesus Feeds 5,000

11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.

12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”

13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”

They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)

But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

Just imagine the logistics of this miracle for a moment: a hundred groups of 50 (if we only count the men) sitting in circles and the apostles somehow distributing five loaves of bread and two fish among them; all were satisfied and twelve baskets of  fragments were collected when the meal was over.  Should we ever fear hunger when Jesus is so aware of our need and so capable of satisfying it:  And if so on just a physical level, how much more with our spiritual needs? There's no limit to his capability and generosity; it's we who need to grow more in confidence that we will take care of ALL our needs, physical and spiritual.

This year Corpus Christi falls on Father's Day in the USA...We honor and thank our fathers , who like Jesus, is countless ways have provided and continue to to provide for us, even if they have gone before us to their eternal reward.  It's the nature of fatherhood:  to love, to provide.  We have more than one reason to give thinks today for our Providers.  Let's not skimp on expressing our gratitude.
