Matthew 10:1-7
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’
Today we witness a dramatic turning point in the mission of Jesus as he now sends the Twelve out to preach and heal. They have watched closely and their daily contact with Jesus has given them confidence. They are ready. The instructions are clear and simple, "Go to the lost sheep of Israel and proclaim 'The kingdom of God has come near.'" As it turn out, the "lost sheep" did not accept the message, and later the Apostles turned to non-Jews with much more success.
Our mission remains the same. There are many "lost sheep"; our churches are empty and being turned into condos; the faith is not being passed on to the young. There's a lot of preaching and teaching to be done. What do I hear Jesus calling Me to do?
Bro, Rene
Dear Jesus, you call us all to be your apostles, your teachers and preachers. Help me to accept and accomplish my mission as best I can. Amen.
