Lk 8:1-3
Women Disciples
8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
These short verses give a welcome thumbs up to the women who accompanied Jesus, providing for him and the Twelve out of their own means. When we think of it, someone had to provide food and perhaps even "laundry service" as the itinerants moved from village to village. It seems that these women voluntarily offered to do as much for "the mission" as they could. We have to remember that women in those days were kept in the background. With Jesus, however, they played a more prominent role. Mary, above all, exerted her motherly care at Cana and followed her Son to Calvary. Mary Magdalene was the first to see the Risen Jesus. Through the centuries women have been prominent witnesses and companions to the followers of Jesus. St. Mother Teresa stands out as the most recent example. May these women inspire us to use our gifts and our lives to minister to others as best we can.
Bro. Rene
Dear God, help me to use whatever gifts I have to follow you faithfully and serve others unselfishly. Amen.
