Matthew 22:34-40
The Greatest Commandment
34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
If we ever wondered why God put us on this earth, the answer is right here: Love him, love others. God is love, created us out of that love and wishes above all that we accept his love and share our love with others. It sounds simple and doable, but too often we allow negative feelings, prejudices and our own selfish desires to short circuit this terse but powerful command. We find that it takes a lifetime to implement, so no matter what age we are or how many times we've tried, partially succeeded or even failed, as long as we are alive, the command holds and demands unremitting effort on our part to keep it, to live it.
