Recognizing Jesus

 Mk 6: 53-56

53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

Can we imagine the excitement that the presence of Jesus mustered? Crowds gathered, people ran to be cured.  No doctor nor hospital was ever so popular. We might say it was basically a "what's in it for me?" or "something for free" attitude which we all know is a strong motivation, but evidently this didn't stop Jesus, who hoped to touch hearts as much as heal bodies. Despite all our sophistication, indifference to God, and rampant agnosticism, wouldn't Jesus experience the same crowds today?

How can we tap into this basic desire for healing and help ourselves and others come to know and love Jesus?

Bro. Rene

Jesus the Christ, when the people of Gennesaret saw you, they recognized your healing power and the love and power of your teaching. Wherever you enter our lives, help us to recognize you and to be open and responsive to the healing and the Gospel message you offer us. Give us the grace to be instruments of your healing and grace in the lives of others. Amen.

 Rev. Louis Delfra, C.S.C.
