Gospel Lk 6: 20-26

The Beatitudes

20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

21 “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.

“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

22 “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.

With half the number of Matthew's eight beatitudes, the "Dear and Glorious Physician" (title of Taylor Caldwell's compelling novel based the the life of St. Luke), St. Luke slices deeply and efficiently to the core of what Jesus blesses.  No sponges or anesthetics, but a call to live poorly, suffer and sacrifice to grow in discipleship and avoid the cushy path to building the Kingdom of God.  It's not for sissies or those who love "the easy life." No, it's based on self-denial and sacrifice, willingness to share one's goods, one's means and even one's bread with the poor; to suffer mockery and derision,  in a word, to follow in the footsteps of Jesus...Come, follow me!
