St. Clare's total renunciation of material goods, her fasting, penances and incredible faith seem to put her on a plane that is far beyond our reach, yet she was a human like us, and from a well-to-do family, so all she accomplished was not easy. It took a strong will and a strong love to leave all and put everything in God's hands. She can help us, as she did so many in her lifetime, to fall in love with Jesus and then pursue what we consider impossible. Even in the daily tasks of keeping a family and household together, as endless and tiring as they may seem, can be offered to God in the same way Clare offered her illnesses and fasting. It's what comes from the heart, it's the love with which we do things that matters. May we not hesitate to ask her for help when we feel we want a closer relationships with Jesus, but face a schedule that hardly allows for six hours sleep a night. She was a beggar and is not stranger to the need to ask. Let us not be afraid to admit our dependency on others, on God, on prayer.
