Approaching Jesus Like Children

Today's brief Gospel tells us that the preferred path to Jesus is through childlike simplicity:  trustingly, openly, with ease, warmth, playfulness and wonder, "for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."  (Mt 10: 14).  We've heard this over and over, yet taken seriously, it is not something easy to do; for we tend to be like the disciples who tried to shove them away.  In our self-reliance over-seriousness and self-sufficiency, we have all the answers and don't need to cuddle up to Jesus as a child any more.  Our "coldness" and distance don't allow Jesus to show his his warmth and playfulness, his simplicity and genuine joy at accepting us as we are.  The mask of "maturity" can sometimes block us from getting close to the heart of Jesus...heart to heart, ours and his...It is like reading the Word of God absent-mindedly, it's thoughts and meaning barely penetrating our hearts. No, this is not the relationship that has made great saints, such as Mary, Marcellin and St. Stephen of Hungary, whose Memorial it is today.  He was baptized at the age of ten, accepted his faith in childlike simplicity and used his role as king to erradicate the vestiges of paganism and build up the Church, like a little boy playing is his sandbox.  Not "rocket science" as is the current catch-phrase.
Is there a sandbox in our backyard where we can play with Jesus?
