Needed Priorities

 Matthew 6:19-23

Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

Jesus clearly directs us from  putting all our marbles in an earthly basket. What is :of earth: will remain here. The treasure, the goal we seek is not of this world, but of heaven, where it will last forever. Our world is losing sight of this as wealth and a widening distance from God and religious practice are fast replacing traditional values. In three concise verses, Jesus sets our priorities. He also reminds us that our eyes  let in light or, if diseased, darkness prevails. We can easily be sidetracked by the media and the loosening of moral standards into a queezy and questionable set of values.  Our call is to stand firm against the values of the world and adhere to the values established by Jesus.

Bro. Rene

Dear God, help me to hold fast to the treasure and the light you provide and not be drawn into the tawdry values proposed by "the world." Amen.
