 Matthew  9: 14-15

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

14 Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast

The Bridegroom has come and gone; now is the time for fasting.  Is it always something regarding the quantity or the type of food? Some of the hardest "fasts" are our daily dealings with each other, when patience is required, or a smile, when a harsh word might be on the tip of our tongues, or when the laptop thinks it know what you want to type and imposes it's own words into  the test, forcing you to keep backtracking and correcting, or when we misplace things and spend precious time looking for them, or when we are severely (or even mildly) distracted in prayer.  The list could be endless.  These are the fastings that bombard us too often, but that can be moments of  soul cleansing as effective as any traditional ascetic  practices.
