The Law of the Gift

St. Pope John Paul II, in reflecting on the "Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes" stories in the four Gospels, formulated what he called "The Law of the Gift": " your being increases in the measure you give it away."  As Fr. Robert Barron explains, since God has no need of anything, whatever we give to him bounces back to us, bigger and better.   We certainly see this law at work in the multiplication stories...all are fed and twelve baskets of remains are picked up.  Certainly when we receive the Holy Eucharist:  the tiny gifts of bread a wine fill the souls of a churchfull of the faithful. Saint Marcellin, and the other saints gave generously of their lives and their gift blossomed.  In the case of the Marist Brothers...to a global force of consecrated religious and dedicated lay people who are educating youth in 80 countries.  Even in giving our "little moments" to Jesus in the course of the day, the little tasks like answering phone calls or e-mail, washing dishes, cutting the lawn, shopping...the thousands of little things we do each day can multiply good beyond measure when offered to him.  May we being this giveaway right now!
